How Spirit Speaks To Me is an acrylic 18 x 24 x 1/2 inch abstract painting on gessoboard in my 2023 series, Dreams.

In Chinese cosmology, there are five elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth and these govern all natural phenomena - similar to many cosmologies. The governing premise is that all matter can be understood (and thus harnessed or influenced) as the relations (connections, influences, etc) between these elements. Chinese cosmology defined Chinese culture, so this premise underlies Chinese medicine, Daoism, etc. For example, colds can be addressed by removing enervating dampness, diminishing amplifications like wind, and applying more heat.

Simply put, all matter (physical and metaphysical) in the universe is or requires a balance of elements; to know this is to know the universe.
